It's been said that doulas have tons of tricks up their sleeves...tricks to help labor be more comfortable, tricks to get through the long nights with a crying baby, tricks to make breastfeeding more comfortable.
Expectant Mother: "Do you have any tricks for helping me turn my baby into a better position for birth?"
Doula: "No, I can't pretend to know what is the best position for your baby to be born in, but I do know that when certain ligaments and muscles are tight, it causes babies to position in the uterus in a particular way. I can share ways to stretch and lengthen those ligaments and muscles for your own body mechanics. Tending to your self care from doing the exercises will help you feel better and most likely ease some of the discomforts of labor but I don't reposition babies."
Sleep Deprived Parent: "What kind of tricks can you show me to help my baby GO TO SLEEP?!?!?"
Doula: "I don't have any tricks, but I CAN explain why your baby sleeps the way he sleeps and how you can help him sleep more soundly. I can help you understand why he cries so much. I can help you learn to read his early cues before he starts to cry so he will go to sleep easier and sleep longer. I can share with you tools to encourage a balanced, or regulated central nervous system so your baby can have increased periods of calm, content and happy wakefulness and move into sleep easier."
My skill set is not a "bag of tricks." It is the result of 20+ years of caring for and studying infants, sleep, behavior, and the anatomical, biological, and physiological needs of mothers and babies.
YOU DESERVE to have a knowledgeable birth and postpartum doula who has resources, education, wisdom, and experience from working with hundreds of families for over two decades. Now that's a TREAT!
